Religion and Public Life

Garry Wills has recently surveyed the influence of conservative evangelicalism on Catholicism and on the Bush administration in “Fringe Government,” available in the Oct. 6th 2005 New York Review of Books, or on-line for $3 at: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/article-preview?article_id=18308 .

Those interested in the subject of Religion and Public Life will find Wills’s discussion of influential conservative Catholics, Rev. John Neuhaus and Rev. Joseph Fessio, and lay Catholics, Michael Novak and George Weigel provocative. Questions and reflection on the subject of Religion and Public life emerged from the SVHE sponsored Wingspread Conference and at the Society’s Annual Meeting in Portland (July, 2005). Attention to this topic continues early next year (2006) at SVHE’s Regional meeting in Washington D.C. and a session at AAC&U’s (American Association of Colleges and Universities) annual meeting, which meet concurrently, January 26th-28th, 2006.
