Can We Talk? The University’s Role in Transforming Public Discourse

In a time when misinformation, disinformation, and “fake news” run rampant, how can institutions of higher education respond to the need for accurate information and civil discourse? What ethical obligations do universities and their faculties have to the common good related to accurate and honest information? What is the University’s role in transforming public discourse? The Society for Values in Higher Education (becoming the Society for the Future of Higher Education in late July) tackles these questions at its annual meeting.

No time for your own research or your own academic interests this year because you had to adapt your courses for hybrid instruction? Take advantage of this opportunity at the SVHE conference to get your work back on track!

Creative and scholarly endeavors need time, space, and accountability. This year’s meeting will offer an open virtual “studio space” setting for meeting participants to set aside intentional time and space in their calendars to work on projects of their choice. Following a “studio” model, this will be an unstructured space for work where those gathered can engage in “virtual co-working” for additional accountability and occasional interaction to help spur creativity and productivity. All are welcome to make use of this space throughout the meeting.

James Weatherall is a Professor of Logic and Philosophy at University of California Irvine.

Their work examines the many factors that contribute to consensus and dissensus—particularly in regard to science and public policy.
